Families Free serves, researches, and advocates for children and families of prisoners in our communities.
Since the early 1980’s, the U.S. prison population has grown by 360%. Today, one in every 99 residents in the U.S. are behind bars.
“The decision to so extensively invest in and rely on imprisonment as a solution to crime problems has unnoticed costs and consequences that we are only beginning to understand” (Hagan & Dinovitzer, 1999).
We now see that many children of prisoners suffer under…
the emotional impact of a parent’s incarceration
tight finances
disrupted lives
prolonged exposure to stressors
These children have become the most at-risk group of children in the U.S. as many follow their parents into the criminal justice system.
Join Families Free in restoring justice to the innocent children of the incarcerated.
“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound with mine, then come, let’s work together”. (Lill Watson)
Families Free co-founder, Melissa Neal, is currently working on her dissertation research project investigating the educational performance of children of prisoners. The information from this study may provide a greater understanding of how to support children of prisoners academically, thus improving their success and decreasing the likelihood of entering the cycle of incarceration.
